Rubi’s Interview

Can you tell us about your journey to Minnesota? Why/when did you choose to come to the United States?

A: My journey to Minnesota began when I was 16 years old. At that time, I had dreams of pursuing higher education and exploring opportunities beyond what my small town in Mexico could offer. The United States, particularly Minnesota, seemed like a land of promise, with renowned educational institutions and diverse communities. So, at 16, I made the bold decision to move to Minnesota to pursue my dreams of academic and personal growth even though it has been hard for me leaving everything behind for a better future. I am currently in college aspiring to be a nurse.

What has been/ still is your experience with education here?

A: Initially, my experience with education in Minnesota was challenging. When I first arrived, I didn’t know a word of English, which made navigating academic settings quite challenging. However, with determination and hard work, I managed myself in language learning programs and sought out supportive communities. Over time, I became fluent in English and found my footing in the educational system. Now, I find my experience to be rewarding as I embrace opportunities for personal and academic growth and I am currently in college which has been a big success for me. I actively participate in campus life and I try everyday to learn new things.

What was your first job in Mexico? What was your first job in Minnesota?

A: My first job in Mexico was as a part-time cashier at a local grocery store and also working at my mom’s job sometimes. It was a modest but valuable experience that taught me responsibility and the value of hard work. Upon arriving in Minnesota, I secured a job as a waitress at a restaurant. This role not only helped me improve my English skills but also gave me insight into American work culture and provided valuable experience in customer service.

Do you currently have a job?

A: Yes, I currently work as a tutor for Spanish language learners. It’s a part-time job that allows me to share my cultural heritage while helping others navigate the intricacies of the language. Balancing work and studies can be challenging, but I’m determined to excel academically and build a bright future for myself in my new home. During the summer I am planning on working as a CNA since I obtained my license in 2023.
